Arrived in Egypt for the first time at 1.00am this morning after coping with Heathrow security etc etc. First impressions:

They drive on the right in spite of still using pounds as their currency;

They identify the quality of fruit by naming the best quality after film stars and worst quality after George Bush;

They claim that more Mercedes are sold in Egypt than in Germany;

On arrival at the airport we were whisked into a luxury lounge, had our passports and luggage tickets taken away and suddenly everything (customs, passport control, luggage carousel) was fixed - nowhere else in the world that I've experienced...

We're here because the Egyptian Government has decided to encourage competition among publishers to produce the best quality textbooks for schools and colleges. Macmillan has worked in Egypt for more than thirty years and intends to be part of the massive opportunities of a country with 15 million schoolchildren, 4 million university students and a commitment to education as a driver of economic and social progress. There are many many problems but as usual we follow our new mission statement - We're doing our best.

Richard

Do they need a hand with their public libraries?

Welcome to Egypt! Glad to see a major publisher like MacMillan taking an interest in the country. I have a question: will you be establishing offices in Cairo, and will they be able to handle book pitches from fiction and non-fiction authors interested in writing in English? There are a lot of English-educated people in the Middle East (all the elite private schools teach in English) and quite a few aspiring authors. If you made it easier for authors to approach you in their home country, you just might find the next Adhaf Soueif.

Thanks. We do already have an office in Cairo but we are focussing initially entirely on helping with educational publishing as a first priority.

Why on earth (or in Cairo) would you ask for espresso coffee when a Turkish coffee is the best in the world?

Tried it. Not very impressed!

1st time to your blog; recommended as witty.. When I use that line about "Trying my best", I'm spousely told that "My best is not good enough!"

Our alternative mission statement is Churchillian: Keep buggering on.

I am glad to post my views and points in this blog, but I must say that webmaster of this blog has done a very great job to make his blog more informative and more discussable but unfortunately everthing is same here that more than 80% in this and other blogs post their comments for making spam!!!, so i will really all this spam links to google band tool, because webmaster makes blogs for making discuss and for sloving each other problems. thanks http://www.gordoniihoodia.net

After what seems like forever (but is really only 4 days) my v7ndotcom elursrebmem entry finally ranks, coming in somewhere between 25 and 30 depending on what ranking tool and data center you happen to be using (SERP). However now that every SEO on the planet has a blog I thought I might cruise around the blogosphere and see how blogs are being used in the contest. http://www.bigpenispill.net
