I was cheered up on the way to work this morning to hear about about a BBC6 competition to establish the worst pop song lyrics of all time. The one that stands out and deserves everything it gets is from a song by ABC with the same title as this posting. Here is the last verse for your Friday enjoyment.

More Sacrifices than an Aztec priest,
Standing here straining at that leash,
All fall down,
Can't complain, mustn't grumble,
Help yourself to another piece of apple crumble

There's a bit of momentum in the UK book world at the moment in support of independent publishing. Both Waterstone's and Borders have announced schemes to support independents such as free window displays, front-of-store promotions at no cost etc. There are, however, a couple of problems.

First, what is an independent publisher? Is it defined by membership of the Independent Publishers Guild? If so, what would happen if, for instance, Random House were to join the IPG? Is the word 'independent' a euphemism for 'small'? If so, is Faber, as an example, small enough? If it means 'privately owned and funded' can Macmillan benefit from these excellent opportunities? If it means 'free to publish non-mainstream books' then Picador should be a candidate.

Second, assuming that there is a finite amount of money and prime retail space then a benefit to one sector of the industry must be a disbenefit to the rest. In other words a publisher such as Hachette Livres is being forced to subsidise some of its competitors by one of its distributors. Is that a sustainable or acceptable situation? I hope UK booksellers either recognise that Macmillan is an independent publisher and warrants the same generous treatment as the officially-designated independent publishers or allow us to negotiate lower discounts in view of our having less-favoured treatment.

Reminds me a little bit of that old joke:

Q. How do you set up a small publisher?

A. Take over a big publisher and wait for all the government schemes to kick in.

Ooh, I have some comments to your thought-provoking post.

Firstly, I bet you a fiver that Snowbooks gives better discounts to retailers than Macmillan. You can phone me to compare notes if you like. Small and independent doesn't necessarily mean that we operate non-commercially.

Secondly, indies are often a feeding ground for the larger companies for authors and ideas. We are subsidising your R&D!

Thirdly, a comment about the definition of independence. I know that lots of indie publishers would disagree with me on this, but my working definition of an indie publisher is one who has bet their own farm on the business. The fierce passion and determination to succeed that comes from growing a company from nothing, with your own money, is something that employees of shareholder-owned companies never quite match.

Emma

1. I think your first para is probably proposing a breach of anti-trust regulations!
2. New publishing businesses are great and fortunately the barriers to entry have been reduced by technology etc. Not only are they a feeding ground for larger companies but they sometimes become larger companies (eg Bloomsbury)and sometinmes they can form excellent alliaqnces with larger companies for sales and distribution with benefits all round.
3. The problem with your personal working (and interesting) definition is what you mean by betting the farm. Nearly all the major companies have incentive schemes for senior managament which link success to their remuneration and hence the need to sell up or buy a farm. I don't know how many of your staff have invested their own money in your company but I imagine not all of them. As you grow, the proportion of non-owner staff will incresae but I don't think that necessarily damages your independence.

Thanks for the fascinating thoughts, Richard, which I pretty much agree with. Oops for nearly breaking the law - best not phone, on second thoughts!
