Invariably when there is discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of print versus digital delivery of books, someone says: 'Ah, but you wouldn't want to read an e-book in the bath.' I am therefore most grateful to New Yorker Chris Steib who has undertaken a controlled scientific experiment comparing his Sony Reader and a print copy of Thomas Pynchon's The Crying of Lot 49. The Reader won!

I must thank Jeff Gomez and his Print is Dead blog for stimulating the experiment in the first place and then bringing it to my attention. Jeff's book (in print and digital editions)with the same title comes out in November.

I had a meeting yesterday with the person responsible for the OUPBlog. They manage approximately two postings a day, which puts me to shame - and they are very interesting. My only defence is that most days the blog is written by one of their illustrious authors while I'm pretty much a sole trader with the occasional and much-appreciated support of some Macmillan colleagues.

I've just seen the latest account from Google ads, a majestic $122.78. Here's my question. Do the ads upset any of you in any way?

The mention of e-readers and New York makes my comments here not totally inappropriate.

Today is a black day for the terrestial booktrade : the stock and fittings of Gotham Book Mart are to be liquidated by auction (at 11.30am Eastern time) on behalf of the New York City Marshal to meet Gotham's outstanding rent liabilities.

The Gotham Book Mart website is still live on line - without any sob stories or tales of woe.

P Scott Brown (editor of Fine Books and Collections magazine) is adding up-dated background details via his excellent blog

http://www.blogmyfinebooks.com

In 2007,when there is no place for Gotham Book Mart one wonders what other shocks will face the terrestial quality booktrade (both new and secondhand).

Incidentally, I do not consider £45 expensive for an academic (or reference) hardback - but that, as they say, is another matter. On days like this I feel rather old - but not tired : my father was born 118 years ago today !!

Didn't even realise there were ads on your blog.

The only ones I notice are the intrusive ones
[e g at The Times] which block the page and have to be X-ed out.

can't say i notice the ads much. But your question made me look over to the right, where I saw Loot.co.za , a local online bookseller. clicked on their ad and came in on one of our own title! So it must be good

A typo error from Grumpy in my first comment.

Apologies, must be the Zummerset sun.

The ads on this site are actually interesting and sometimes funny (once one was for insomnia medication, other times it has been for self-publishing platforms, etc.). It's interesting because it gives a window in to what Google "thinks" your blog is about. It's pretty obvious that it is strictly keyword driven. It will be fun when the day comes that more semantics and context are used to target ads.

The eReader/book post was hysterical - I KNEW you'd pick that up the second I saw it - see that I'm starting to "get to know you" even though we've never met. Isn't blogging interesting that way!

No upset here. TiVo users actually watch the advertising appearing during recorded shows, I recall.

Am trying to read your blog in the bath here in Beijing, not very successfully ... hadn't noticed the ads. Am trying to think of ways of spending $122.78, but whatever you decide, I think you deserve it.

I've never noticed the ads - honestly. This is the problem with online advertising...for those people who spend all their time online, getting rid of spam our of your inbox, etc. you tend to automatically blot out the extraneous stuff (perhaps it's all going into the subconscious?).

I'd spend the $122 on a Sony Reader - oops, that retails for $350 - or approx 4 copies of the Literary Tourist ;-)

Richard,
Please donate the proceeds of your advertising income to a worthy charitable cause. Peanuts for some are continued sustenance for others. I could suggest a few charities, but I'll leave it to your discretion, should you decide on this route. And I hope you do. (I also think you'll do this.)
Best regards,
CFR

Interesting that the OUP blog seems to be from the USA and not from HQ!
