I suugest that non-cricket lovers and anglophiles give this a miss.

When I went to bed on Monday night in the Cotswolds I calculated that the England cricket team would boringly bat until teatime on the last day of the test match in Adelaide thus scuppering any chance of a victory and ensuring a feeble but safe draw. Being an optimist I thought that maybe, just maybe, one of the batsmen would shine and we'd be able to get ourselves into a position where we had more than three hours to bowl Australia out and level the series. It was only when I woke at the ungodly hour of 3.30am that it occurred to me that England's batting might collapse and leave Australia a gettable target. I immediately realised that this was a wholly irrational nightmare and went back to sleep. On awakening I logged into BBC Sport and the excellent ball-by-ball commentary of Ben Dirs. This is what he had to say and there's nothing much I or anyone else can add:

18.53: That was the biggest load of rubbish I have ever seen. Lots of Aussies going berserk in Adelaide, lots of Englishmen looking like they've arrived home to find the French doors have been smashed and their new plasma TV's been stolen. Thanks for staying with me for the last 10 days - it's been a mix of emotions, but mainly depression and boredom, with a bit of anger and embarrassment thrown in. I'm off to Venice this weekend though, that should be nice, they don't even know what cricket is there. Bye.

Hi Richard,

As yesterday was my wind down day and I woke at 2.20am for some unknown reason I got up to watch it live.

I knew I shouldn't watch it but as the next hour unfolded it became almost compulsive in its horror.

Aussies began their innings and I had memories of Edgbaston in my minds eye. Well for one over. Langer and Hayden took 10 off of it and the writing was on the wall. The nadir was the seven off Flintoff. Three run plus a schoolboy four over throws.

I worry about the long term mental damage this defeat has done to the England team. The aussies are an awesome team and they will rub England;s faces in the dirt across all five Tests. McGrath's 5-0 prophecy no longer looks that fanciful !

Having just emigrated to Italy, today the application form for tickets to Lords tests next year follows me in the post. I was wondering whether to chuck it in the bin or ask them to redirect the forms to Firenze.

We will probably lose to India and the Windies in the summer -- its for the bin.

I still believe that England can win Ashes by 3-2. There are few potential players under performed during last 2 matches. I observed expression of captain Flintoff in press conference after 2nd match and he looks confident but feeling pressure of captaincy.
England is the only team knows “Aussi” psychology better and being an old rival of Aussi, I hope for the best for England fight back.
It is now interesting to see how England will defend in upcoming matches!!

Here in American we don't have ready access to the broadcast. It is just as well. We do have the 'benefit' of a time difference. The first ball is bowled about 7:15pm here and I 'watched' intermittently by reading the play by play on skysports. Each time I returned to my computer during the evening I have to say my worst expectations were constantly reinforced. No matter what the circumstances England can find a new way to loose. This wasn't 'same old england' as some have suggested this an entirely new chapter. Just woeful. This and the rugby deary me....

We lack consistency. I keep saying this.
