I've done a couple of blogs about the British Government's efforts to stop criminals earning money from publishing books about their crimes. There have been good comments in from various people (disappointingly few from Macmillan employees) mainly politely (or impolitely) telling the Government not to interfere. The dangers of legislation would almost certainly exceed any potential benefits. The risks of unintended censorship and reduction of freedom of speech are inherent in any such legislation.

However, the case of O.J.Simpson's latest efforts highlights another angle. Maxim Jakubowski in his Guardian blog argues that booksellers should refuse to sell Simpson's book (which evidently tells the story of how he would have committed the double murder but which, of course, he did not). Maxim is owner of Murder One which is London's leading crime bookshop and he knows a thing or two about true crime and criminals (not personally you understand). Now, I'm not sure that any sort of censorship is appropriate but the irony of this case is that, under the proposed legislation, O.J.Simpson would fall outside the recommendations because he was found not guilty of the crime.

Regan Books (part of HarperCollins USA) are publishing If I Did It in the USA but HarperCollins UK say they will not. Presumably the UK were offered the rights and declined on grounds of taste. Certainly the only Simpsons mentioned on the UK site are Bart and his family (presumably no relation). I'm sure that both Maxim and HarperCollins UK will sleep more soundly for not being involved but censorship....?

I don't know Maxim, but I don't agree with this line of thinking. One reason why books are so important is that people can write utterly daft and horrid things in them. If members of the public choose to buy them- that is their choice.

Many of us risked much over a book called "Satanic Verses" believing that what ever is said and written must available to be read. Individuals must be able to distinguish between sense and nonsense- and others may guide but must not prevent them from doing it for themselves.

Words can be cruel and violent, but not so much so as guns and bombs.
11/19/2006 11:00:29 AM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)
do really equate declining to publish something and censorship?
11/19/2006 12:21:01 PM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)
Maxim is a bookseller- not a publisher. My point is that booksellers should not decline to sell.

11/19/2006 12:30:23 PM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)
I don't believe in legislation banning books, but I do think a publishing house has the right to choose what it will and will not publish. In this case I am appalled that Random House uS decided to publish and publicise this book. I, and I hope thousands of other book buyers, have emailed them to tell them that this is a major misjudgement on their part. I am not an author, but if I were, I would not be happy to be published by the same house as O.J. Simpson. I cannot imagine my local independent bookshop stocking this bloody tome, and if they did I would boycott them.
11/19/2006 12:59:30 PM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)
The bookworld is polluted with hypocrisy.

Maxim Jakubowski happily *stocks* books written about some of the worst serial killers of the 20th century, yet via his Guardian blog presumes to tell his US colleagues that they should boycott the OJ Simpson book.

I was very interested to read all the excellent coverage by Sarah Weinman on GalleyCat ; especially noteworthy is a link to Sara Nelson's views on Publisher's Weekly which draws a most interesting comment from agent Peter Riva.
11/19/2006 1:23:28 PM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)
Publishers turn down thousands of manuscripts every day - why would turning down this one be deemed censorship? Because this may have more profit potential? Because there may be some people who would actually want to read it? I could make the same argument for thousands of others.
The line of thought is not logical.

I do not think that anyone, let alone Richard Charkin, has suggested that for a publisher to "turn down" this book would be tantamount to censorship.

As an indie bookseller I find some of the title's marketing tactics to be rather dubious - allegedly offering this title un-named with minimal details, embargoed - but initial supplies only to those who pre-order without knowing author, title or content etc: however,I respect the right of all publishers to publish all books without constraints of censorship, meddling by government bureaucrats etc.

When Regan took the decision, or received approval from Murdoch, to "run" with this title then there was certain to be plenty of discussion. The basic question is "Should this book be published?" - I would say yes, and leave it to the publisher's owners to deal with the ethics of the situation, and worry themselves about the economics of an alleged 300K print run.
11/19/2006 2:04:49 PM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)
Jo, I'm pretty sure you shouldn't be sending your emails to Random House USA but to HarperCollins. I think I'm more on the publish and be damned wing of this argument but wouldn't want the wrong publisher blamed!
11/19/2006 11:59:33 PM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)
Ulp! thanks for that Richard, I can't think what made me type Random House - I did know it was Harper Collins and it is them I have emailed.
11/20/2006 11:25:54 PM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)
Looks like Murdoch responded to the bad press and pulled the book (as of BBC News Nov 20).

I'm sure it'll be published at some point here in the UK however. Murdoch has a soft spot for the OJ Simpson case, as a then fledgling Sky News (circa 1994) was the first to break the story of OJ being pursued at low speed by the fleet of police cars. It helped to boost subscriptions so much, they even ran an advertising campaign the following year "The Simpsons - You Saw It First On Sky" with a shot from the chase.
11/21/2006 7:14:53 AM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)
Certain interest groups are going to take this volte-face by Murdoch as indication that publishers can be influenced to pull controversial books.

Nobody was being forced to stock the book, sell the book, or buy the book.

Any comments, Richard, on the new Macmillan deal the convicted criminal Jeffrey Archer's been given? It surely can't be the 12 million reported, can it??
11/21/2006 4:10:06 PM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)
Just saw this on cnn.com:
>>>>>>>>paste
-- After a firestorm of criticism, News. Corp. said Monday that it has canceled the O.J. Simpson book and television special "If I Did It."

"I and senior management agree with the American public that this was an ill-considered project," said Rupert Murdoch, News Corp. chairman. "We are sorry for any pain that his has caused the families of Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson."

Adam, Your question about Jeffrey Archer's advance for his next books. We do not publish details of any of our authors' contracts any more than we publish our employees' earnings. What I can say, though, is that you shouldn't believ very much that you red in newspapers and particularly when journalists may be axe-grinding.
